  • Salary: The salary range for this position is $77,162pa to $124,786pa (commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience) plus superannuation

Located 60km south of Sydney, and sitting on 1600 hectares, the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) is the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Centre of Excellence for Plant and Animal Health. It is NSW’s premier biosecurity facility with critical infrastructure and world recognised research scientists.

Built to the latest PC3 standards EMAI delivers “Disease Intelligence for Disease Control” through its world class laboratories and plant & animal high containment facilities, international experts and national and international linkages. It provides local, state, national and global disease advice through NSWDPI, to the commonwealth, the OIE and FAO.

 

In your role as Veterinary Virologist (Trainee) at EMAI you will join a world recognised team that undertakes diagnostic and research investigations of viral infections of farm livestock, poultry and aquatic animals that could lead to loss of markets for NSW livestock and products; damage their reputation for food safety and quality; reduce the efficiency of production or pose a threat to public health. 

 

The team undertakes research to support disease control programs through the development of new diagnostic tests and vaccines, maintain or improve market access for animals and products, increase the efficiency of animal production, reduce risks to public health and wildlife and the impacts of feral animals on the environment.

 

In your new role as Veterinary Virologist (Trainee), you will:                  

  • undertake a period of intensive training to become a veterinary virologist. On completion of the training period, you will:
  • be responsible for supervision of diagnostic virology on a rotational basis, including oversight of specimens received, review of testing operations and preparation of reports;
  • provide technical advice to clients, prepare detailed technical reports;
  • carry out research into virus diseases of animals;
  • assist with review of procedures and standards to ensure that operations meet quality standards.

 

What You’ll Have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Science, registrable with the Veterinary Practitioners Board NSW
  • Citizen of Australia or permanent residency;
  • A desire to develop a long-term career in veterinary virology. Previous experience with animal disease investigation in a field context would be an advantage but virology experience is not essential. After initial training, postgraduate study will be encouraged as appropriate.
  • Good oral and written communication skills,
  • Comply with work standards according to the level of appointment in the Professional Officer Progression Criteria (1-4) scale in the Crown Employees (NSW Department of Trade and Investment) Professional Officers Award
  • A current driver’s licence

 

In addition, the successful candidate will be able to:

  • work in a team environment and have an ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • balance competing demands and deadlines in a fast paced, constantly changing environment
