  • Salary: (Professional Officer Grade G1-4) The salary range for this position is $66,298 to $127,332pa (commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience, as outlined in the Crown Employees (Department of Industry, Skills and Regional Development) Professional Officers Award and the NSW DPI Professional Officer Progression Criteria) plus superannuation

About Us

Located 60km south of Sydney, and sitting on 1600 hectares, the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) is the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Centre of Excellence for Plant and Animal Health. It is NSW’s premier biosecurity facility with critical infrastructure and world recognised research scientists.

Built to the latest PC3 standards EMAI delivers “Disease Intelligence for Disease Control” through its world class laboratories and plant & animal high containment facilities, international experts and National and international linkages. It provides local, state, national and global disease advice through NSWDPI, to the Commonwealth, the OIE and FAO.

 

The veterinary laboratories at EMAI are a critical ‘first line of defence’ in providing early detection of any significant, emergency, emerging or exotic farm animal diseases. The ISO9001 accredited laboratories provide specialist research and diagnosis in the fields of animal pathology, virology, microbiology, immunology, parasitology and plant pests and diseases. The diagnostic laboratories provide NATA 17025 accredited diagnostic testing.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • If required, you will undertake a period of training to become a veterinary pathology diagnostician or pathologist.
  • On completion of the training period, you will be responsible for the case management of diagnostic, surveillance and assurance submissions to the laboratory on a rotational basis, including oversight of specimens received, review of test selection and preparation of reports
  • Provide technical advice to clients, prepare detailed diagnostic reports
  • Assist with research projects and educational or outreach opportunities as they arise

 

What You’ll Have:

  • A degree in Veterinary Science registerable with the New South Wales Veterinary Practitioners Board
  • Australian citizenship, Australian Residency or ability to work in Australia
  • A desire to develop a long-term career in production animal veterinary pathology. Previous experience with animal disease investigation in a field context would be an advantage but pathology experience is not essential.
  • Post Graduate Qualification in veterinary pathology or related discipline, such as Masters or PhD, is preferred but not essential
  • Veterinary Pathology Qualification by Examination such as Membership of the ANZCVS in pathobiology or commitment to sit is highly desirable,
  • A current driver’s licence
  • Comply with work standards according to the level of appointment in the Professional Officer Progression Criteria (1-4) scale in the Crown Employees (NSW Department of Trade and Investment) Professional Officers Award
  • In Addition, The Successful Candidate Will Be Able To
    • work in a team environment and have an ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
    • balance competing demands and deadlines in a fast paced, constantly changing environment
    • have excellent oral and written communication skills
