We are looking for a Technical Officer to be part of the Virology Laboratory within NSW Biosecurity & Food Safety. This is a full-time opportunity, initially for 2 years. Part-time appointment by way of job sharing maybe considered for the right person.

 

  • Be part of a team providing laboratory testing and research for virus diseases
  • Located at Menangle within the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute
  • Salary range from $63,199 to $97,616 + super (based on the Technical Officer 1-3 Progression Criteria).

What’s on Offer?

As a Technical Officer, you’ll be:

  • Working as a member of the Virology Laboratory team at the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute;
  • Part of the wider Biosecurity & Food Safety Division and NSW Department of Primary Industries team.

 

What you”ll do:

  • Undertake testing of samples from farm animals, wildlife and aquatic animals for evidence of viral infections;
  • Assist with the care of animals and collection of samples;
  • Perform a wide range of laboratory duties.

 

What you’ll have:

  • a degree in biological science (or equivalent) in accordance with the Crown Employees (NSW Department of Industry) Technical Staff Award
  • knowledge and experience in a range of virology procedures including:
    • aseptic techniques
    • preparation and maintenance of cell cultures
    • serological tests such as ELISA, virus neutralisation, AGID and haemagglutination
    • virus isolation and antigen detection procedures
    • real time PCR and other molecular biology techniques
  • a capacity to work independently and in a team environment
  • an enthusiasm to develop new skills
  • outstanding and systematic record keeping abilities
  • familiarity with computerised recording systems, word processing and spreadsheet software
  • an interest in biosecurity and disease prevention

 

And if you’ve got this even better:

  • Good understanding of and involvement in quality management systems and regulatory requirements of a diagnostic and research laboratory
  • experience with the development and evaluation of new diagnostic tests for virus infections
  • experience in working with and caring for animals
