What you will be doing  

 

You will be joining DPI Fisheries, providing support to the Shark Meshing Program through the observation and documentation of information associated with contractor meshing operations and the collection of appropriate biological samples. As part of this role you will observe and document the procedures involved in the setting, hauling or running of nets within the region to ensure it is being undertaken in accordance with the Joint Management Agreement (JMA) and all departmental terms and conditions.

 

DPI Fisheries is responsible for administration of the Fisheries Management Act 1994 and the Marine Estate Management Act 2014. The primary objective of DPI Fisheries is to deliver on expectations relating to both economic growth and careful stewardship of our aquatic resources. They lead NSW fisheries and aquaculture industry management, development and conservation through research, policy and regulatory compliance to foster sustainable and economically viable commercial, recreational and aboriginal fishing and aquaculture sectors. DPI Fisheries also manages the protection of key fish habitats and marine biodiversity, threatened species, oversees fish stock conservation, and administers the State’s shark mitigation and incident response programs (hereinafter referred to as the Shark Program).

 

What you will need to be to be successful in this role: 

 

  • Experience in the identification of a variety of marine species; especially shark species
  • Experience in the use of biological sampling equipment and techniques in the marine environment, and capacity to transport and appropriately store biological samples
  • Ability to work at sea and under a variety of hydrological and climatic conditions while complying with relevant Departmental and legislative obligations with respect to Workplace Health and Safety
  • Ability to liaise and provide information to private contractors
  • Ability to manoeuvre and tow trailers
  • Current First Aid Certificate and NSW Drivers licence
  • Ability to use various computer programs and mobile applications
  • Good attention to detail
