About Us 

The Department of Regional NSW (DRNSW) was formed in 2020 as a central agency for regional issues. The Department has responsibility for building resilient regional economies and communities, strengthening primary industries, managing the use of regional land, overseeing the state’s mineral and mining resources and ensuring government investment in regional NSW is fair and delivers positive outcomes for local communities and businesses.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) supports the development of profitable primary industries that create a more prosperous NSW and contributes to a better environment through the sustainable use of natural resources.

NSW DPI, Strategy & Engagement develops and drives whole of NSW DPI strategic priorities including Cabinet and legislation, corporate affairs and Parliament, market intelligence and forecasting, science risks and opportunities, and stakeholder engagement. The policy team within Strategy & Engagement leverages the significant expertise across DPI to develop evidence informed policy that delivers positive outcomes for primary industries and our natural resources.

About the role

Provide strategic policy advice and undertake complex research and analysis for the development, coordination, implementation and review of evidence based primary industry policies and legislative frameworks. The role liaises extensively with other divisions within the Department and state government agencies and involves driving whole of DPI strategic policy projects; building and maintaining relationships across DPI and with key stakeholders; identifying opportunities and risks across DPI that lead to new policy priorities; and identifying and acting on opportunities to advance DPI priorities in Commonwealth and NSW Government policy. The work in the role relates to DPI’s strategic priorities which are Carbon Neutrality and Climate Resilience, Sustainable Resources and Productive Landscapes, Biosecure Industries and Environment, Food Safety and Animal Welfare, Response Capacity and Economic Growth.

In this role your key accountabilities will be:

  • Manage and coordinate strategic policy development by preparing briefings and advice in response to Ministerial and Departmental Executive requests.
  • Analyse and review policies and regulatory frameworks and their impact on primary industries and provide advice to the Department, Minister and other agencies.
  • Support the delivery of the Division’s cabinet, legislative and regulatory programs.
  • Undertake research and analysis, and liaise with industry stakeholders to identify emerging issues and recommend solutions to resolve problems and mitigate risks.
  • Prepare briefings, papers, submissions, Ministerial and other correspondence, speeches and reports in relation to the work of the Branch and the Division.
  • Represent the Department in state and national policy forums and negotiations to advise on strategic policy issues and obtain feedback.
  • Review the implementation of policy and policy reforms to assess appropriateness, effectiveness and efficiency and determine the need for corrective action and policy review and to inform future planning.
