The EMAI Microbiology and Parasitology section (within the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI)) is currently seeking a Senior Parasitologist to drive diagnostic testing and diagnostic R&D, as well as ensure a coordinated approach to diagnostic service delivery and quality assurance in the Veterinary space.

 

Working closely with both staff within the Microbiology and Parasitology Laboratory, as well as across the broader EMAI and DPI space, you will be responsible for:

 

  • Managing staff and coordinating workflow within the Parasitology team, as well as conducting and supervising parasitological diagnostic testing
  • Liaising with professional and technical staff within the Microbiology and Parasitology section, veterinary pathologists and field veterinarians to provide advice on appropriate parasitological tests and techniques to be undertaken, as well as on testing outcomes
  • Mentoring and training of technical staff in theoretical concepts and practical approaches relevant to diagnostic parasitology
  • Identifying and implementing technical developments relevant to veterinary parasitology and then planning, designing and conducting appropriate quality research experiments to enhance our diagnostic capability
  • Maintaining peer relevance by keeping up to date with scientific developments relevant to veterinary parasitology, establishing and maintaining effective scientific and industry networks, delivering presentations and attending seminars/ conferences and other professional forums

 

To be successful in this role you’ll need to have a degree qualification in Veterinary Science, Science or a related field, a strong theoretical background in parasitology and demonstrated experience in diagnostic parasitology with a willingness to be hands on when required.  Prior evidence of managing a diagnostic laboratory and/or technical staff is desirable. Experience in developing molecular diagnostic tests is also highly desirable.

You’ll need to also have excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, be able to juggle multiple competing priorities and have the confidence to filter and prioritise requests and negotiate deadlines when required.

 

Please note: The salary range for this position is $66,779 pa to $124,786 pa (commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience, as outlined in the Crown Employees (Department of Industry, Skills and Regional Development) Professional Officers Award and the NSW DPI Professional Officer Progression Criteria) plus superannuation.
