Diversity and inclusion are core values of the Department of Regional NSW. We encourage applications from people with a range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. This includes differences in culture, gender, sexual orientation, language and disability status or other attributes. The Department of Regional NSW is a workplace where everyone is able to contribute and participate to their full potential, and we are proud to have a team that reflects the richness and complexity of the regional NSW communities we serve.

Northern Tablelands Local Land Services is seeking a highly motivated and well organised person, with strong leadership, planning and communication skills to manage the biosecurity program functions and partner with landholders, community groups, government agencies and other stakeholders to help safeguard against risks of pests and animal diseases in the local area and across the broader Northern Tablelands region.

As a Senior Biosecurity Officer, you will:

  • Lead, manage and coordinate the day-to-day delivery of biosecurity programs and advisory services
  • Manage, support and provide guidance and direction of a team of Biosecurity Officers
  • Plan, coordinate and lead operational projects, including animal and plant biosecurity surveillance activities, pest animal control programs and disease investigations
  • Deliver compliance programs to ensure legislated biosecurity obligations for pest and disease management and livestock and plant traceability are met
  • Be available and support other staff to prepare and respond to emergencies within the Agriculture and Animal Services Functional Area
  • Work collaboratively with other LLS teams from the agriculture, natural resource management, animal heath, and business services functions to deliver integrated customer service focused advice, projects and services.
  • Engage with landholders, community groups, government agencies and other stakeholders to raise awareness of biosecurity issues
  • Deliver and coordinate training to landholders on best practice pest management controls and support them to implement control programs

About You

Ideally you will have a comprehensive knowledge of animal biosecurity and welfare and/or pest management and compliance as it relates to the Biosecurity Act 2015 and the Local Land Services Act 2013; you will be someone who can translate priorities, plans and standards into effective on ground field programs, ensuring what we deliver is in line with the needs of our customers, land managers and the legislation that we operate under.

You will be a subject matter expert on biosecurity matters, and act as a reference point for the team in making decisions and giving guidance on challenging scenarios, managing industry and community expectations whilst operating in fast paced, technical environment where immediate requirements can take precedence over planned activities.
Our ideal candidates will be great communicators with exceptional written and oral communication skills. You will be adept at developing rapport, collaborating and coordinating with customers, stakeholders and investors to implement legislative requirements, policies, procedures and guidelines across a broad range of activities.

Essential Requirements:

  • A Certificate IV in Government Investigations, or the ability and willingness to successfully complete it
  • The capacity to hold an NSW firearms licence or equivalent, as well as obtain the Statement of Attainment - Use firearms to humanely destroy animals (AQF AHCVPT203A or AHCPMG304) and be willing to humanely euthanise animals when required.
  • The ability to be appointed as an Authorised Officer under the Biosecurity Act and the demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and apply legislation and regulations, preferably related to biosecurity matters.
  • A current NSW Class C Driver License and the ability and willingness to travel (including overnight stays) as required
