What will you be doing:

Within your area of expertise in Molecular Entomology, you will determine gaps in our current genetic capacity to identify high priority arthropod plant pests accurately and rapidly. You will develop an array of contemporary genetic methods for their detection, surveillance, and control, with an emphasis on Biosecurity outcomes. You will lead the choice and oversee team use of appropriate diagnostic protocols in the event of novel exotic pest incursions in NSW. You will integrate and co-ordinate your molecular activities with other Plant Biosecurity scientists and officers to ensure access to novel platforms and methods. You will work to integrate your activities broadly with the needs of other researchers involved in Plant pest surveillance and control.

 

 Working as the new Research Officer (Molecular Entomology) you will:

  • Identify and prioritise emerging molecular entomological issues to ensure a targeted research and development program relevant to the needs of plant industries in NSW
  • Develop and implement DNA-based research projects to deliver outcomes in accordance with contractual arrangements
  • Work with co-researchers to apply effective genetic pipelines for the identification and control of priority arthropod pests to support plant health and Biosecurity preparedness in NSW.
  • Establish and manage research experiments, data collection and collation, analyses and reporting in accordance with business and auditable requirements, and contractual milestone arrangements
  • Keep up to date with technical developments relevant to the contracted research, including methodologies, data management systems, instrumentation
  • Establish and foster effective scientific and industry networks, attending professional forums to ensure that the Department has access to relevant contemporary information.
  • Actively promote the acceptance and adoption of your research within NSW DPI and with external collaborators as a means of contributing to the Department’s corporate goals
  • Comply with work standards according to your level of appointment in the Professional Officer Progression Criteria (1-4) scale in the Crown Employees (NSW Department of Industry) Professional Officers Award.

 

What you need to be successful as a Research Officer (Molecular Entomology):

  • Degree qualifications as relevant to the role e.g. Agricultural or Biological Sciences or other related field, preference given to those holding a doctoral qualification
  • The ability to work independently, and provide direction to other staff
  • Proven molecular research record with modern sequence and probe-based technologies, and demonstrated experience in delivery of entomological or related biosecurity projects
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach
  • Current NSW Driver License

 

About Us 

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) supports the development of profitable primary industries that create a more prosperous NSW and contributes to a better environment through the sustainable use of natural resources.

Within NSW DPI, the Biosecurity & Food Safety Division is responsible for effective management and risk minimisation of biosecurity threats to NSW as well as the through-chain regulation of food safety. It delivers a risk-based approach to policy and compliance, and provides regional engagement and coordination in response to emergency incidents and natural disasters impacting primary industries and the food sector.

The Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute, located 60km south of Sydney and sitting on 1600 hectares, is the DPI Centre of Excellence for Plant and Animal Health. Built to the latest PC3 standards EMAI delivers “Disease Intelligence for Disease Control” through its world class laboratories, plant & animal high containment facilities, international experts and national and international linkages. It provides local, state, national and global disease advice through NSW DPI, to landholders, growers, veterinarians, companies, NSW government, the Commonwealth, the OIE and FAO.  The research group conducts high level work of significant value to Australian plant industries at key research institutes across NSW.
