The Aquatic Biosecurity team (within the NSW Department of Primary Industries) are looking for a passionate and talented professional to assist with the prevention and management of aquatic pests and diseases throughout NSW.

As an Aquatic Veterinary Policy and Program Officer you’ll be joining a group of professionals who are committed to protecting the NSW economy, human health and the environment from problems associated with aquatic pests, diseases and saltwater weeds.

Working in partnership with internal and external stakeholders, you’ll be providing innovative solutions to current and emerging aquatic biosecurity problems, and be pivotal to the delivery of key aquatic biosecurity projects & emergency response functions, supporting the delivery of priority projects in the Aquatic Biosecurity Program, as well as in responding to the Aquatic Biosecurity hotline for emerging pest and disease issues.

Carrying out a wide range of research, analysis, reporting and project activities which support the delivery of projects, policy, standards and procedures in aquatic biosecurity (pest and disease) you’ll be:

 

  • Undertaking field based data collection activities, evidence collation and analysis, options and solution development, evaluation of outcomes and internal and external stakeholder and community consultation
  • Analysing, developing and promoting appropriate aquatic biosecurity and aquatic animal health solutions, policy positions (including the development of policy options) and programs to address existing and emerging issues
  • Preparing a range of project or policy related documents such as briefs, reports, status updates and discussion papers.
  • Supporting the team in planning, preparedness and operational responses to aquatic biosecurity emergencies, to assist in the delivery of a coordinated and effective response during a biosecurity emergency event, including taking part in the duty on-call rotation.

 

To be successful in this role you’ll need to have:

  • Degree in Veterinary Science and registered to practice in NSW under the Veterinary Practice Act (essential)
  • Experience in biosecurity risk management, in particular aquatic animal health management preferred.
  • A broad understanding of the issues facing the aquatic biosecurity sector and knowledge of the relevant policy and legislative frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management (delivering small, medium and large projects and milestones) combined with an understanding of technical risk analysis.
  • Proven experience contributing to team discussion, developing professional relationships with varying stakeholders and a knack for creating solutions to aquatic biosecurity problems.
  • The ability to think laterally and respond quickly to unexpected changes in priorities.
  • A talent for working both autonomously as well as part of a team.
  • A valid NSW Driver Licence as well as the ability and willingness to travel throughout the State, undertake fieldwork and present information on behalf of the team at various forums is also required.

 

Please note: The salary range for this position is $64,779pa to $86,430pa (commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience, as outlined in the Crown Employees (Department of Industry, Skills and Regional Development) Professional Officers Award and the NSW DPI Professional Officer Progression Criteria) plus superannuation.
