The Department of Regional NSW is responsible for ensuring that regional communities continue to be great places to live, work, play and invest. About the role

The Regional Futures Team develops evidence-based solutions to long-term and complex policy problems facing regional communities. We partner with other government agencies, community stakeholders, and technical experts to drive better outcomes for regional NSW.


We work across a broad range of issues – your job as a Policy Officer could include:


  • Preparing long-term strategies that set the agenda for regional NSW – our recent work includes the 20-Year Economic Vision, the Future Ready Regions Strategy, and support for the  Regional Economic Development Strategies
  • Developing innovative policy proposals to enhance essential service delivery in regional communities, and work to address complex social policy issues
  • Partnering with other agencies to make it easier to set up and grow a regional business, including through infrastructure investment and regulatory reform
  • Supporting effective decision-making during significant challenges impacting the regions – everything from bushfires and drought, to COVID-19 and mouse plagues
  • Working with the Commonwealth and other States and Territories to develop new ideas that influence the national agenda, including through National Cabinet.

Our successful candidates will be great problem solvers and have a passion for creating change through evidence-based public policy. We’re a collaborative team and are looking for people to join us who have a track record in building trusted relationships with stakeholders and clients.

The best ideas come from a diverse team. We’re looking for people from a range of backgrounds, including university qualifications in economics, science, engineering, law, geography, natural resources, and town planning (or something different?).
