What you will be doing

 

You will be joining the Fisheries Research Branch of the DPI Fisheries specifically focusing on estuarine habitats in the Marine Estate.

 

As a Spatial Data Scientist (Estuarine Habitats), you will contribute to the development and coordination of research projects required under the Marine Estate Management Strategy, specifically estuarine habitat monitoring.  Work will include developing new methods for mapping estuarine wetlands using multispectral imagery and developing spatial models for investigating associations between human impacts and changes in extent of estuarine habitats using the latest modelling techniques. You will utilise GIS concepts and R or Python to develop new machine learning and/or Deep Learning techniques for mapping and modelling habitat distributions.  This role will require field work, project management and publication and dissemination of scientific findings.

 

Working as a Spatial Data Scientist, Estuarine Habitats you will:

 

  • Supervise and undertake fisheries scientific research programs
  • Maintain, manipulate and analyse data ensuring accuracy and integrity of data is maintained
  • Provide accurate and timely information, advice and recommendations to key stakeholders
  • Produce and publish written reports and scientific papers to disseminate research findings
  • Work with and develop a small team to assist with field and laboratory work
  • Manage the day to day operations of the Fisheries Research Units’ operations including budgets and staff resourcing
  • Represent NSW DPI Fisheries at research conferences and with stakeholders to promote the research activities and ensure they remain integrated in industry and government planning

 

What you need to be successful as a Spatial Data Scientist, Estuarine Habitats:

 

  • Qualifications in accordance with the Scientific Officers, Various Departments Agreement No. 2433 of 1982, along with relevant qualifications and high-level experience in the areas of spatial data analysis and remote sensing, particularly using object-based image analysis of aerial or satellite imagery.
  • High level GIS skills, especially multispectral image analysis, machine learning using Python or R
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with maintaining and manipulating spatial data and spatial modelling
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and delivery
  • Experience in publishing scientific papers and securing competitive research grants
  • Experience working in the field, ability to travel, drivers licence
  • High-level skills with Word, Excel and statistical software
