We are seeking a District Veterinary Officer to join Western Local Land Services and become an expert in animal disease investigation and management.  Applications from both experienced vets and new graduates who are interested in production animals are welcome to apply. Where will l work?

The Western Local Land Services region is the largest in NSW, covering 314,500 km² or 40 per cent of the state.  It is larger than Victoria and Tasmania combined.  Despite its size, it is the least densely populated region, with a population of approximately 42,873 people (18,500 of whom live in the city of Broken Hill).

About the role

As a District Veterinarian, you will conduct animal disease investigations as well as facilitating the delivery of a range of projects and programs to assist in prevention, preparedness, detection and response to biosecurity threats and animal diseases of state and national significance. You will be supported and mentored by a fantastic vet team, get to travel around the beautiful outback of Western NSW and get to work with wonderful landholders.


In this role, you will:

  • Deliver animal biosecurity surveillance activities to ensure rapid identification of new and emerging biosecurity threats and assist in the implementation of response and post recovery programs
  • Undertake disease investigations in all livestock species and provide advice and analysis to ensure timely response to biosecurity threats
  • Promote and advocate for best practice Animal Biosecurity and Welfare practices
  • Deliver compliance programs to ensure legislated biosecurity obligations including pest and disease management and livestock traceability meet national performance standards
  • Implement plans and strategies for engagement with the community and other key stakeholders to enhance understanding of the animal biosecurity and welfare functions of LLS

Our ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills to be able to communicate effectively, build professional relationships with team members, community members and other external stakeholders. Provide positive customer experiences for our landholders and have initiative to progress and deliver outcomes. 

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree in Veterinary Science registrable in NSW and registration with the NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board
  • Experience in large animal welfare, husbandry and medicine with knowledge of epidemiology
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the impact of biosecurity threats on communities, agriculture and natural environment including current approaches to field biosecurity service delivery and animal welfare
  • Current NSW Driver Licence and the ability and willingness to travel
