Secretary’s Animal Care & Ethics Committee

The Secretary’s Animal Care and Ethics Committee (Secretary’s ACEC) is established to give effect to section 25A of the Animal Research Act 1985 (the Act), whereby an individual may apply to the Secretary for an animal research authority. Its primary responsibility is to ensure that activities involving animals for research and teaching purposes under its supervision comply with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (the Code) and relevant legislation.

The role of the Secretary’s ACEC involves but is not limited to:

  • the consideration of applications for animal research authorities from individuals and small establishments that are unable to establish their own Animal Ethics Committee (AEC), and for the supervision of animal supply for research by individual holders of animal supplier’s licences,
  • the assessment that the care and use of animals for scientific purposes is justifiable, balancing the potential effects on the wellbeing of the animals involved against the potential benefits to humans, animals or the environment, and
  • supporting the wellbeing of animals by applying the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement).

Current Vacancy

The Secretary’s ACEC currently has vacancies for:

  • Category C (welfare) member, a person with demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals, who is not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution, and who is not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. Further details are provided below.
  • Category D (community) member, a person not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution and who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond their undergraduate education.
  • Duties Include:

    • Provide recommendations of an independent nature.
    • Attend AEC meetings (8 per year).
    • Review Animal Ethics submissions and documentation prior to AEC meetings.
