Who is the
Department of Regional NSW? Why work for us?
Our Department is responsible for building resilient regional economies and communities, strengthening primary industries, managing the use of regional land, overseeing the state’s mineral and mining resources and ensuring government investment in regional NSW is fair and delivers positive outcomes for local communities and businesses.

We encourage applicants from all backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, the LGBTIQ+ community, veterans, refugees, and people with disability. We support an inclusive workplace where staff have access to opportunities and resources at all levels, enabling our team members to drive innovation, productivity and delivery of high-quality services. We provide dignified access to reasonable adjustments both during the recruitment process and in the workplace. If you require reasonable adjustment during the recruitment process, please call or text the contact for this role.

Central West Local Land Services are looking for a Biosecurity Officer to undertake field and regulatory activities which support programs and advisory services for the management of animal and plant biosecurity for the Region, as well as undertake surveillance and investigation activities as they relate to animal and plant health and disease control.

As a Biosecurity Officer, you will be responsible for:

  • Undertaking day to day on the ground delivery of invasive pest, plant, and animal biosecurity programs and advisory services
  • Undertaking regulatory compliance work, with a focus on the education of customers and clients.
  • Assisting with operational projects, including animal and plant biosecurity surveillance activities and disease investigations
  • Assisting with new and emerging biosecurity issues, incidents, and emergency responses

This is a role where lots of training is provided, and as such, you’ll need to be someone who’s willing and prepared to learn. It’s a role that carries a lot of responsibility and you’ll need to be honest, reliable, and trustworthy - someone who can build strong professional relationships with local farmers, landholders, and businesses.

You’ll need to have a good understanding of livestock with proven livestock handling skills. You’ll also need to be able to follow procedures and processes (especially as you’ll be handling dangerous substances and pesticides), and have a general understanding of land management and plant and animal pests and diseases.

You’ll be a jack of all trades - as comfortable speaking to colleagues, contractors, clients, and being in the field as you are with technology and completing paperwork, and need to have basic project management and budgeting skills.

Whilst you don’t need to know everything required for the role now, you will need to be able to quickly develop and maintain a working knowledge of the legislative and regulatory requirements related to pest animal management in NSW.

About You:
This is a role for someone who loves being in the field and working with people and animals, and to be successful you’ll need to have a current NSW Class C Driver License and the ability and willingness to travel (including overnight stays) as required.

Ideally you’ll have some or all of the following now, however, if not you’ll need to have the ability and willingness to obtain these as part of your employment in the role:

  • The ability to undertake Biosecurity Officer accreditation including a Certificate IV in Government Investigations
  • The ability to hold and maintain Authorised Control Officer status under the Biosecurity Act
  • Appropriate pesticide application qualifications (minimum AQF3 level)
  • The capacity to hold an NSW firearms licence or equivalent, as well as obtain the Statement of Attainment - Use firearms to humanely destroy animals (AQF AHCVPT203A or AHCPMG304)

How to apply:
If this role sounds ideal to you, please apply via our online portal by submitting your resume and a brief cover letter outlining how your skills and experience match what we are looking for. We will then get back in touch after the closing date.

Applications through email will not be accepted.

Closing Date:  Sunday 16th May @ 11:55pm

For further information about this opportunity please contact Nigel Boyce - Team Leader Invasive Species, Plant Health on 0437 712176 or via  You can also download the Role Description.

Additional Information:
A talent pool may be created from this recruitment action for ongoing and temporary roles of the same standard that may become available for filling over the next eighteen months. The successful applicant in this role may be required to undergo a police check, health assessment and other assessments as required.

Closing date: May 16, 2021
