You will be joining the Aboriginal Fishing & Marine & Coastal Environments (AFMCE) and Fisheries Research Branches of the DPI Fisheries to conduct and support Aboriginal projects aimed at protecting Aboriginal cultural heritage and values of Sea Country as part of the Marine Estate Management Strategy.
About you
The key component of this role is to implement key actions of the NSW Marine Estate Management Strategy 2018-28 Initiative 4 “Protecting the Aboriginal Cultural Values of the Marine Estate”. This will require you to establish a network of Aboriginal community stakeholders to deliver projects that improve the protection of Aboriginal cultures and aims to integrate Aboriginal cultures, views and values into marine park and marine estate management.
As part of your role, you will acknowledge and respect Aboriginal communities’ expertise and cultural knowledges in caring for Sea Country. You will contribute to supporting DPI colleagues to improve knowledge across the branch ensuring that policy and marine estate planning considers and respects Aboriginal cultural values. In addition, you will develop and implement projects that will include early engagement of Aboriginal people in Sea Country management to reduce threats and risks to Aboriginal cultures and cultural heritage. This presents an amazing opportunity to make a difference to the overall health and wellbeing of local Aboriginal people, their cultural practices and traditions as they relate to Sea Country.
